In this Q&A, we catch up with Isabel Kerr, newly qualified family solicitor at Consilia Legal, who recently completed her training contract and stepped into a permanent role within the firm. Isabel shares her inspiring journey into law, from securing a week of work experience at Consilia to qualifying as a solicitor in July 2025. With a passion for supporting clients through some of life’s most challenging moments, Isabel brings empathy, energy, and dedication to her role. Here, she gives us a glimpse into her day-to-day work, the rewarding and sometimes challenging aspects of family law, and a few fun facts about life outside the office.

Q: Hi Isabel, tell us about your path to law…

I commenced my undergraduate degree in law at the University of Liverpool. Following my degree, I was incredibly lucky and secured a week of work experience with Consilia Legal, and after completing this week of work experience I was offered a position as a paralegal. During this time I carried out my Legal Practice Course (LPC) part-time in the evenings at Leeds Law School while working full-time at Consilia. On completion of my LPC in July 2023, I was offered a training contract at Consilia Legal which commenced January 2024. I completed my training contract on 3rd July 2025 and was offered a permanent position as a family solicitor.

Q: How long have you worked at Consilia Legal?

I have worked at Consilia since August 2021.

Q: What does your day-to-day role involve?

Every day is different. I advise clients on all different matters from divorce, children arrangements, financial remedy matters, and cohabitation agreements. This includes direct advice, as well as assisting in the preparation of documents and representation.

Q: What makes your job interesting?

I really love that you can see the benefit in the support and advice you give to your client. A lot of clients understandably will have never been through the legal process before and are very nervous about what is to come. I enjoy being their support and making them feel less anxious and more at ease.

Q: What do you find challenging about working in family law?

It can be challenging to manage a client’s expectations as to what the court can do and what they are asking for.

Q: What do you like doing in your spare time?

I love to keep active outside of work, whether that is HIIT classes, Pilates or running. I recently tried out paddleboard yoga which is also a new favourite!

Q: If you weren’t a family solicitor, what would you be?

I think I would be a teacher.

Q: Any little-known facts about you?

I completed the Rob Burrows Leeds Marathon this year.

It’s clear that Isabel’s passion for helping others, combined with her determination and drive, makes her a real asset to the Consilia Legal team. We’re excited to see what the future holds for her as she continues to grow in her career and support clients through every step of their family law journey.

Thanks Isabel!
