St Gemma’s Hospice is a local, independent charity. They’ve been providing expert care to the people of Leeds for over 45 years. St Gemma’s cares for people with life threatening illnesses and difficult symptoms. Their care is built on a simple belief: each person is more than their illness. They will have touched the lives of most people reading this page.

Why St Gemma’s

With just 30% of their funding coming from a core NHS grant, St Gemma’s needs to raise £25,000 a day to maintain their excellent standard of care and providing dignity in end of life.

The Hospice was founded by the Sisters of the Cross & Passion and opened in 1978.

The Sisters identified the need for a hospice caring for terminally-ill patients and their families. Thanks to widespread support from the people of Leeds, the new 9-bed unit accepted its first patients on 12 April 1978.

The building has undergone several expansions since then and they continue to care for our local community, both at the Hospice in Moortown and in their own homes across the city.

St Gemma’s offer a large range of expert services, both in the Hospice and in the community, that can support you at any stage of your illness.

The Hospice provides In-Patient care but is not just a building; most of St Gemma’s patients are supported in the place they want to stay – often their own homes.

They provide and promote the highest quality palliative and end of life care, education and research.

Critically – 100% of the patients surveyed reported being treated with dignity and respect. They felt cared for and supported by St Gemma’s community nursing team and therapists.

How St Gemma’s Made an Impact in 24/25

• 535 were given dignified and well managed care in the Hospice
• 19,420 calls were made to patients at home by community nurses and doctors
• £15m was raised to continue vital services
• 2,170 out-patient sessions were held to provide emotional support to patients
• 2,337 bereavement support sessions for adults and children helped families navigate their grief
• 1,439 healthcare professionals were trained
